DIY BUTTON FRONT MIDI SKIRT

Hi there! Today I’m gonna show you an easy and super on trend skirt to make. It’s great as the weather is warming up but maybe you’re not ready to show off too much leg (being that they’ve been hidden from the sun for a while!) Enter the Midi Skirt.

I have been eyeing different midi skirts and am usually drawn to ones with buttons down the front. But I can’t ever pull the trigger on buying one when I know that it would be so easy to make one myself! Skirts are pretty straightforward to make and especially this style being that it isn’t too fitted. You really only have to worry about getting the waist measurement right and other than that you should be golden!

I found this tencel fabric at Joann a while ago and it is sooo buttery soft! I bought a few yards knowing that it would be great for so many different projects, this being one! This style of skirt would work great with so many different types of fabric. I think I may need to make myself another skirt in a pretty print as well! The possibilities are endless

So let’s get started!

SUPPLIES:

  • 1.5 -2 yards fabric
  • Thread
  • 8 buttons (more or less depending on the size)

STEPS:

  1. Measure your waist then add 2 inches to that measurement, to account for seam allowance (½”) and overlap of the button front. Cut one long rectangle with that measurement x 4”. This is your waistband.
  2. To make the body of the skirt take your waist measurement and multiply that by 1.5 or 2, depending on how full you want your skirt to be. Then measure a skirt you currently own or measure from your waist to a spot you’d like the skirt to hit and add 2”. This will make up the body of the skirt. If you would like side seams on the skirt you can split this big rectangle into 3 rectangles but just add ½” seam allowance to your rectangles.
  3. Sew up the side seams if you added them and finish seams as desired.
  4. Create your button placket by folding both edges of the center front under twice. Use your buttons to determine the size of the placket. Stitch in place.
  5. Sew two lines of basting at the top of the body and gather the skirt to your waist measurement plus the button placket overlap. With right sides together sew the gathered edge of the body of the skirt and the waistband together leaving ½” overhang on both ends of the waistband. Press the waistband up.
  6. Now to create the waistband. Fold and press the raw edge of the waistband under ¼”, wrong sides together. Fold the waistband in half, right sides together matching the ¼” pressed edge and seam you pressed in step 5. You will have ½” overhang on both ends of your skirt waistband. Sew the waistband edge together at ½” and grade the seam. Flip your waist band right side out, turning that new edge under. You should now have two straight center font seams. Pin the waistband in place and top stitch the waistband catching the pressed edge behind it and encasing all of the gathers as well.
  7. Add buttonholes and buttons on the button placket.
  8. Hem the bottom, folding the edge up twice.
  9. Give the whole skirt a good steam and you’re ready to show off those legs!

Pretty easy, right?! Now I guess I better go out and catch some rays with all this talk of warmer weather, maybe another stroll with our favorite wagon (LOVE the All-Terrain!). I hope you can get out and enjoy some sunshine too!
