HOW TO HEM YOUR CURTAINS

Today I’m going to show you how I hemmed multiple curtain panels. It’s so easy to do yourself and makes your curtains look like a professional put them up! (With a little help of course…)

IKEA CURTAINS, UMBRA CURTAIN ROD, IKEA CURTAIN RINGS, IKEA CURTAIN HOOKS (NOT VISIBLE)

I’m no curtain expert, but after researching the “Do’s and Don’ts” of curtain hanging, I decided that I wanted them to just “kiss” the floor. So, I made sure that my curtains were long enough so I could hang them wherever I wanted, then be able to hem them as desired.

I went with the popular IKEA RITVA in the 118” length for my 9 foot ceilings. This way I had room to play with where exactly I was going to hang my curtain rod and if I was going to hang them directly on the rod or with rings, etc.

BEFORE

So after mounting the curtain rods and hanging my curtains up, I measured how much extra length needed to be removed to achieve the look I was going for. I did this by simply folding the curtain ends up and taking the measurement of the excess fabric (while your curtains are hanging). Then take that measurement and subtract 1.5”. That is how much you will be cutting off. I measured 18” of excess fabric, so I cut off 16.5”. I used my rotary blade, ruler and mat to get a nice straight cut. If you don’t have those you can definitely just use scissors! All of my curtains measured the same but make sure to check each panel before you cut them.

MAGNETIC PIN HOLDER, MICRO TIP SCISSORS, PINS, JANOME SEWING MACHINE (NEWER MODEL)

Then you will create the new hem by folding and pressing the raw edge under ⅝” then again at ⅞”. Next sew the new hem at a ¾” seam allowance.

Ta da! Nicely hemmed curtains that just “kiss” the floor! Super easy and so worth it. And maybe a good steam is in order now as well?…

I still need to get some light and airy white sheer curtains (any suggestions are welcome!) to hang with these as well, and you bet I will be using this technique again!

Meanwhile I’ll be playing peek-a-boo with this little guy… have a great Sunday!!
